Myofascial Release (MFR)
This technique can be effectively combined with Equine Sports Massage and soft tissue mobilisation. It is a hands on technique that facilitates a stretch into restricted soft tissue through the layers of the fascia. These stretches may need to be held for a significant length of time to enable the tissue to relax under the hands, this restoration will allow the tissues to lengthen and regain there previous mobility.
What is Fascia – It is a tough membrane of varying thickness which envelopes the whole body surrounding every muscle, bone, nerve vessel and organ. It is required to help prevent injury and to protect vital structures within the body. Think of it as a spiders web that covers the whole body.
Fascia can become restricted and therefore cause restrictions in other parts of the equines body as muscles may not be able to move as freely and this can cause a decrease in performance and can also cause compensatory overuse in other muscles. This technique helps to free these restrictions and restore functionality and movement.
Other Therapies
Releasing tension – Other soft tissue methods used during a treatment involve acupressure and working with the horses response. By relieving the tension in key areas of the horse this can restore performance related issues.
